Position Information: Under the direction of the Resident Director: maintain, improve and protect facilities, natural landscapes and systems that benefit and support on-going research and teaching programs at the scenic and biologically rich 9000-acre Granite Mountains Desert Research Center (GMDRC). These include structures, utilities, vehicles, roads, trails, fences, and other infrastructure. Assist with other daily operational aspects of the GMDRC, such as user management and administration, patrolling, purchasing, museum curation, and facilitating events and meetings.
Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.
As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.
The full salary range for the Building Maintenance Worker SR is $24.13 - $31.84 per hour. The expected pay scale is up to $31.13 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Bachelor's degree in science, environmental studies or related field, or equivalent in relevant formal training.

Demonstrated experience using hand tools, power tools (including table saws, drills and compressors), and equipment (including tractors, hitch trailers, concrete mixers) appropriate for general maintenance and construction of buildings and grounds
Required
A minimum of two years construction experience with hands-on experience in multiple construction related trades including carpentry (framing, roofing, drywall, etc.), plumbing (e.g, water and propane lines), electrical, welding, masonry, and basic vehicle maintenance and repair; and knowledge and understanding of California building codes, as well as hazardous materials and general safety policies.

Minimum Requirements
Willing to work variable hours, including holidays and weekends; live in remote location in rustic conditions; may drive long distances and occasionally working long days to attend training, meetings, or to get needed materials and supplies. Must be on-call when necessary to respond to emergencies.
Demonstrated ability to conduct physical labor outdoors in desert environment/wilderness setting (including snow, rain and excessive heat conditions). Ability to hike several miles over rugged terrain and lift minimum of 50 lbs.
Basic computer skills including use of Windows or Macintosh operating systems. Ability to operate email, word processing and use of spreadsheets software. Proven ability to organize, file, prioritize, manage time, write clearly, and interact well with supervisors, colleagues, and reserve users.
Able to anticipate and identify potential health and safety hazards; and willingness to confront and communicate effectively, and safely, to trespassers.
Able to become sufficiently familiar with GMDRC operating procedures in order to manage the reserve in the absence of directors and other administrative personnel.
Ability to learn and interpret to visitors the basic natural history of the reserve, including the names of plants, animals, geological formations. Become familiar with regional places, roads and history of the reserve and surrounding region.

Basic understanding of state and federal agencies and regulatory policies that apply to research and land management issues, and general knowledge of conservation issues in relation to reserve management.

Facilities and Grounds Management
Repair and maintenance of facilities and grounds, including painting, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, power generation systems (including operation and maintenance of photovoltaic solar systems and gas-powered generators), heating and cooling systems (propane heaters and stoves, woodstoves and refrigeration units, solar water heaters), water systems (waterlines and trenches, well pumps, storage tanks, filters and general plumbing), roads and berms, gates and fences, trails and signs. Maintain, repair, and drive vehicles, tractors, trailers and other transport systems as needed. Organize and maintain tools, supplies and maintenance facilities (e.g., shops, sheds, yards and garages). Custodial duties include: sweeping, mopping, cleaning sinks and toilets, washing windows and screens, dusting furniture, trash and recycling removal. Inspect and maintain fire safety systems and equipment and supplies. Maintain a safe, visually aesthetic and functional landscape around facilities that incorporates native plant horticulture and schemes that preserve the environmental and cultural/historical integrity of the GMDRC. Work with part-time employees and supervise volunteers.

User Management and General Administration
Responsible for reserve operations when other GMDRC staff are off-site or on extended absences, including operation of main office and communications. Assist the GMDRC Resident Director and other staff as needed with visitor use of facilities for research, teaching and outreach activities. Assist with management of user applications and reservations including RAMS documentation and sign-in sheets, billing invoices, and correspondence as needed. Assist with user arrival/departure, including preparing lodging, use of laboratory and meeting rooms, communicating GMDRC rules and regulations, check-out inspections, and billing or fee collection. Support researchers and classes with equipment and utility needs. Coordinate reserve use to avoid impacts and conflicts among other users. Select and purchase supplies and equipment following UCR Purchasing policies. Perform accounting tasks as needed and maintain all files and records. Assist with curation and organization of Allanson Center Library, including map and photo libraries, and collections (animal, plant and archaeological). Under the direction of the Center Director, assist in organizing workshops, meetings, and conferences; participate in public outreach activities including teaching, guided tours, and lectures/demonstrations.

Construction
As directed and supervised by the Resident Director, participate in the design and construction of small projects involving facilities repairs, renovations and upgrades, including privies, storage sheds, decking, walkways, bird boxes other research and educational props. Assist other GMDRC and UCR staff with planning, design and implementation of major facilities additions and upgrades. Facilitate and work with vendors and construction contractors as needed.

Resource Management
Provide skilled labor and applied techniques in support on-going restoration or reclamation projects, including invasive species and erosion control, native vegetation restoration and protection, rare species habitat management and protection of archaeological sites. Assist in establishment and maintenance of monitoring studies (e.g, monitoring sensors, and phenological or photo-monitoring transects). Perform regular patrols to maintain reserve boundaries and redirect public trespass. Assist in recording and maintaining on-site climate and other data monitoring systems.
